A massive jellyfish has been spotted off the coast of Cornwall, UK. Marine awareness officer Matt Slater brought along his dog for a swim to catch a closer look at the organism.

The barrel jellyfish weighs about 44 pounds and measures over 3 feet in diameter. The jelly is certainly large, but it’s also surprisingly beautiful.

Barrel jellyfish have a bell that is shaped similar to a dome. They are soft white in color with a delicate pink tint. Purple and blue lobes are located near the margin of the bell. The jellies don’t have any tentacles, but they do posses solid oral-arms.

Those curious enough to get an up-close look can take comfort in knowing this particular species of jellyfish does not sting.

Slater explained “Most years these larvae will perish but in years where the conditions are good, temperatures are optimal, there is plenty of planktonic food and predators do not eat them all, large numbers of them will survive creating these huge jellyfish swarms.”

In addition to the barrel jellies, Cornwall's north coast has seen large numbers of blue jellyfish along with an increase in sightings of compass and moon jellyfish.
