An Egyptian court sentenced three al-Jazeera journalists to seven years of prison, in Cairo on Monday. Australian Peter Greste, ex-CNN-journalist Mohamed Fahmy and local producer Baher Mohamed were handed down the sentences are being convicted of aiding terrorists and damaging national security.
Family members and supporters outside the court, including Greste's brother Andrew, wept and cried when the news came through.
Greste, Fahmy and Mohamed have been in custody for almost six months. The three journalists were among 20 defendants in the trial, which also decreed several sentences for foreign journalists in absentia.
