In his address he encouraged people to rid themselves of shame about who they are and centered much of his talk around the idea of revelation.

As biblical example of the community’s struggle, he cited the story of Hagar, a handmaiden who birthed the child of Abraham and was exiled with their son.

He encouraged support among the group and the widespread acceptance of it.

The service was presided over by the Right Reverend Gene Robinson, the first Episcopal Bishop to be openly gay.

Readings and prayers were offered by numerous individuals from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community as part of the cathedral’s LGBT Pride Month celebration.

The cathedral’s dean, the Very Reverend Gary Hall, said that he hoped the service would convey support for greater equality for transgendered people.
