France's longest rail strike in recent years continued into its ninth day Thursday as workers took to the streets of Paris in hundreds, carrying flags and setting-off smoke grenades. Unions voted on Tuesday to extend their walk-out by a further 24 hours.

The rail workers are protesting a controversial reform of the state-run rail system that would open it up to competition.
