The dawn chorus calls to Sleepy Day
with urgent voice that seems to say,
‘the end of night is nigh,
shake a leg Sleepy Day! ’
The day raises its heavy eyelids,
rolls its bloodshot eyes
and bathes the horizon
with the colours of dawn.
Gingerly, Sleepy Day rises,
looks at the celestial clock,
panics and shouts,
‘Blimey, I will be late! ’
Hurriedly it jumps out of bed,
casting aside the bed cover
revealing the sun it had hid,
hoping to sleep an extra hour.
Thank God for the dawn chorus,
even though it can be a nuisance,
for without it day will not begin at dawn,
Sleepy Day is inclined to stay in bed till noon.
