The eastern Ukrainian city of Slaviansk bears testimony to the fight -- with damage lined streets in the pro-separatist stronghold.
Against this back drop, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is calling for a truce.
(SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT, PETRO POROSHENKO, SAYING:
"According to the decisions which the Ukrainian Security and Defense Council will adopt today, a ceasefire will be offered, as the start of the implementation of the peace plan of the president of Ukraine."
But it's a ceasefire with a time limit.
(SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT, PETRO POROSHENKO, SAYING:
"I want to underline, that the time of the ceasefire will be limited. Because it will be irresponsible today to get dragged into a lasting negotiation process, because we don't need to have talks for the sake of talks."
