some claim we were born alone
but was there not a heartbeat heard
as we grew within a mother’s womb
a placenta provided oxygen food
nourishment fed through umbilical cord
shadow post birth after us expelled
a hand took us cleaned us cut cord
totally dependent helpless we received
a heart fed us loved us meet our need
we were cared for we grew lived
to prosper all life is time given nourished
all life that endured love received
there was a time when we were not alone
each moment of growth was a heartbeat heard
those who give foster love in a world womb
