Herbert Nehrlich 2 - Pebbles Always Sink

Tonight...
I have lost a bit,
a slice of substance
that will usually sustain a man,
and in its place
I have reluctantly
acquired
a pouch of pebbles
solid, gray and smooth
with rounded edges
that will slip
and slide and even swim
amongst the boulders
of the glacier's creek.

Buoyed by the golden rays
that filter through the trees,
it may not be enough
to overcome the weighty tale
but stones will seek
the comfort of the dark.
