Ted Sheridan - The Sound of Nuts Cracking

Everyday rain or shine for the past year
The same grey squirrel scratches at the eaves of my roof
He is trying to gain access to my attic
Where he can breed more scratching rodents
The life expectancy of a squirrel being that of a year or two
He has much work to attend to while…
His mate gathers nuts from the Pecan tree that overhangs the roof
Their children hurriedly bury the freshly hulled nuts in the ground below
From the sharp shooting eyes of the many Crows
Perched next door in the Magnolia tree just waiting for them to leave
I sit in my chair and type my will and epitaph
Leaving my nuts to God
