Natasa Tocuc - Blueberries

I was a small blueberry once
in summer shade-
deep shadows of sleeping dogs, watchful of
lily ‘s leave and orchid's flower, both sandal-footed and
cold-grass frolicking, issuing to the backyard
world a summer-girl chirrup succeeded by one
toothy boast and one laugh
I was a blueberry sometimes then-
a summer dress made of me, a scarlet flower-
clothed in a blueberry-hued and seed-studded
white-dotted fabric frock,
I twirled and orbited a small place
like the same true flower in warm soil
among chastening blueberry blooms
in the small backyard.

The blueberry and I-
black and dark green, sweetening in summer sun
laughing at the distillation of time,
at the absence of memory then.
