Herbert Nehrlich - When Johnny dilly-dallied

I know you told me not to dilly-dally.
To watch for cars and motorbikes
and buses, trucks.
Yet, what would YOU have done,
here in this alley,
if you had seen that purple-orange bird
with yellow socks?

You would have watched him,
listened to his pretty song.
That's what I did
and so, how could I see him?
It was a big one, with large fenders,
rather long.
And looked like Al Capone's car
in the Museum.

I must admit, that when it hit
it hurt sooo bad,
and soo much blood came
running down
my smashed-up face.
But, Daddy, can you understand,
and not be sad?

I didn't misbehave on purpose
and in case that you and Mum
will do a lot of crying,
because you miss your
little Johnny, almost six.
At least you'll know
there won't be anybody lying,
it was MY fault and
it is nothing you can fix.

And even though I would have
loved to stay on Earth much longer,
I had looked forward
to the end of that
disgusting school.
And also to my growing up
and getting big and stronger,
I kinda like it up here,
really, Heaven is soooo cool.
