I do not wish that a maiden fair
As jewel wear me in her hair!
To adorn a lover's garland is
Not my heart 's desire! Please
Do not place me on the tombstone
Of an emperor from a time bygone!
Offered to an idol in a prayer will
Not my lone wish fulfil!
Pluck me, will you, O passer-by?
And throw me on that pathway nigh
On which walks that soldier brave
To protect his motherland and meet his grave
