Researchers at Warsaw’s Military University of Technology have created a laser device that can detect alcohol in moving cars.

That includes liquor that’s already been consumed by the people in the vehicle.

The device includes 2 lasers and detectors plus multiple mirrors, and works by picking up alcohol vapors and can also take a picture of the car and alert police.

After that, it’s business as usual, as the officer would pull the car over and proceed with the typical sobriety tests and open container searches.

Those who have responsibly appointed a designated driver need not worry about being erroneously targeted, as the laser’s developers say it can differentiate between drivers and passengers.

Said the developers, it "will surely decrease the number of cars that have to be checked by police and, at the same time, will increase efficacy of stopping drunken drivers."

The laser makers also admitted that it is a pretty easy system to fool.

Both opening car windows and applying solar screens to them can trip up the device’s ability to detect alcohol vapors inside the vehicle.

Because of that, they’ve programmed the detection system to alert authorities if either of those scenarios is sensed.
