Two brothers successfully endured the heat to complete a 40 mile long journey to raise awareness for cerebral palsy. 14-year-old Hunter Gandee is the older bro and he carried his 7-year-old brother, Braden piggyback style, while he walked the entire route.
Braden suffers from cerebral palsy, which makes it impossible for him to walk without assistance. Hunter, who is all too aware of the struggles his younger brother deals with on a daily basis, got the idea for their shared journey to attract attention to the disease.
Hunter trained for months at his high school to prepare his body for the trek. In the end, the walk proved to be difficult. Hunter said they considered stopping at the 30 mile mark.
That’s when he contacted a friend who said a prayer for the brothers. Then the boys took a rest and changed Braden’s position on his older bro’s back. Those factors helped them complete the final 10 miles and arrive safely at the University of Michigan's wrestling center.
The boys’ parents and other siblings also took part in the long walk. Said Hunter "I can't even describe to you how special Braden is to me. I can't put it into words. He's awesome. He's always there for me. I really just wanted to give back to him in some way."
