Ikea’s report about people’s homes and what they do in them revealed that 17 percent of New Yorkers have at one time or another worked while on the toilet.

Ikea’s recently released “Life at Home” report about people’s homes and what they do in them revealed that 17 percent of New Yorkers have at one time or another worked while on the toilet.

It’s not just them, either.

In total, over 8 thousand people were surveyed in cities throughout the world, and using the bathroom as an office on occasion appears to be a global trend.

Those in Stockholm are similarly frequent bathroom workers.

Approximately 10 percent of people in London, Shanghai, Mumbai, Paris, and Moscow said that they’d done it.

While it may sound like the behavior of people who are particularly busy, stressed out, or just workaholics, Ikea looks at the data through a wider lens.

In the report, they say, "Traditional room functions are long gone, and we seem to do whatever, wherever and whenever, something which our new digital savviness allows."

Also notable is that as costs of living continue to rise in major urban areas, people are being forced to live in smaller spaces and possibly even with roommates.

Those situations call for some creative redefinitions of space and how it can best be utilized.
