It's part of a crowd funding campaign the author is running right now to support the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary in New Mexico. There are many pledge tiers that come with various benefits. $50 will get you a t-shirt from the campaign, for example, and $350 will get you a signed map of Westeros. But if you want to take it all the way, Martin is offering two lucky (and wealthy) fans the opportunity to appear, and also be killed, in an upcoming novel for 20 grand.



With the way things are going in Game of Thrones, you pretty much have to die to be considered one of the in-crowd, so the reward seems appropriate.
