The 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy is marked in Bedford, Virginia.

The small town which lost 19 of its men that day-- the greatest loss by any town in the world relative to its population.

Veteran Allen Orndorff served with the 101st Airborne.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) VETERAN ALLEN ORNDORFF SAYING:

"Everything - all hell broke loose and we dropped at night. Couldn't find anybody, was all by myself in a strange country. I couldn't speak the language, didn't know where I was at or what. And finally, we got together a few at a time until we formed a unit. That was about it - we were the lucky ones."

In New York the Statue of Liberty is adorned with a sign that says "The French will never forget"

Rose petals are dropped from a helicopter to mark the day.

World War Two veterans are honored for their service and sacrifice.

88-year old Lawrence Janos served in the Navy.
