STORY: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met with Pope Francis on Friday for a twenty minute meeting at the Vatican.

During the meeting Abe and the Pope discussed ways to promote peace in Asia. The Japanese prime minister also thanked the pope for his support during the Japanese earthquake and tsunami in 2013.

AsiaNews.it reported that the Japanese leader gave a replica of a mirror used among underground Japanese Christians in the 17th century to the Pope, which shows a cross and a picture of Jesus when exposed to sunlight.

In August 2014 Pope Francis is expected to make his first visit to Asia when he travels to South Korea.
