NATO member states' air forces took part in drills in Bulgaria, Thursday, to improve interoperability between their different units. With the event having been planned over a year ago, the Bulgarian Ministry of Defence has said the training is not connected with the crisis in Ukraine.

The international workout, called 'Thracian Star 2014', is being held at the Graf Ignatievo Air Base, close to Plovdiv. It featured the air forces of Bulgaria, the USA, Greece and Romania, and runs through June 4.

Taking part Thursday were F-16s from the US State Minnesota Air National Guard, Romanian MIG-21 Lancers and a Greek unit of F-16s. Bulgaria participated with MIG-29s and MIG-21s, SU-25s and the Aero L-39 training aircraft. In total around 30 aircraft and 700 military personnel were involved in the drills.
