STORY: Pope Francis was greeted by the Jordanian Royal family at the Husseinieh Palace in Amman on Saturday.
This marks the Pope's first visit to the region since assuming his position as leader of the Roman Catholic church.
During the welcoming ceremony, the Royal Guard played the Jordanian and the Vatican national anthems. The Pope also met with government officials, Muslim and Christian leaders and members of the diplomatic corps.
During his visit, the Pope will hold a mass at the Amman International Stadium.
The Pope will also take part in a tour of the holy sites around the kingdom, including the Jordan River, near the site where John the Baptist is believed to have baptized Jesus.
Pope Francis is also scheduled to meet with refugees from Syria and Iraq, following his visit to the baptism site.
He will spend one day in Jordan before flying by helicopter to Bethlehem, making a six-hour visit to what the Vat
