Hundreds of protesters gathered in this northeastern Thai city Chiang Mai, the hometown and base of the powerful Shinawatra family.

Chanting "Get out" and "no to military" it's easy to see where their loyalties lie.

This city is home to two former prime ministers, both of whom have been ousted from power. And they're are at the heart of the bitter power struggle between the populist government and the royalist establishment.

Yingluck Shinawatra was removed as leader for abuse of power, and her brother Thaksin won huge support among the poor but was hated by rival political groups, for alleged corruption and nepotism.

As these protesters took to the streets to condemn the army's seizure of power, Yingluck spent her first night in military custody.

She was detained along with dozens of political figures on Friday as the coup leaders tightened their grip on power.
