Mysteriously, thousands of dead fish recently surfaced off the waters of Marina Del Rey. At this point, no one is quite sure what caused the die-off.

Cops were tipped off about the fish on a recent Saturday night. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies soon arrived on scene and found that roughly 70 thousand anchovies had floated to the surface of the water.

In addition to that perplexing discovery, sting rays and angel sharks were also reportedly left lifelessly floating around. Prior to the cleanup, the corner of the marina was covered in what appeared to be a bed of silver. According to locals, the aftermath left a foul smell in the area.

Once staffers from the Sheriff’s Office arrived at the marine and inspected the spot, the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors was contacted to clear the waters.

Although the cause of the die-off has not yet been determined, there is a speculation as to what went wrong.

Marine experts are chalking the deaths up to a lack of oxygen in the water, due to either the vast amount of fish, the fact that it was low tide at the time of the die-off, algal blooms formed by warm weather or a combination of all those factors.
