The Russian military put on an air show in Sevastopol in honor of Victory Day Friday (May 9).

Planes flew in formation above Sevastopol Bay, as residents cheered and applauded from the shore.

Victory Day marks the anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also made his first visit to the Crimea region since it was annexed from Ukraine in March and made a brief speech after watching a military parade.

Despite the tradition of Russia and Ukraine celebrating May 9 together, Ukraine's new pro-Western officials banned parades in the capital Kiev, fearful they could be targeted by pro-Russian "provocateurs" hoping to discredit the government.

In a break from tradition reflecting the East-West standoff over Ukraine, Moscow and Kiev did not stage joint marches of their countries' sailors in Sevastopol.
