Minimum wage rise fails to halt Venezuela protests

Anti-government protests have continued in Venezuela despite a rise in the minimum wage.

Demonstrators first took to the streets in February, denouncing issues like crime and shortages of many basic goods.

And with inflation at around 60 percent, a 30 percent minimum wage rise, announced by President Nicolas Maduro, has failed to assuage their anger.

“Simply because he does not earn the minimum wage, for him that’s enough,” said Caracas resident Nathaly Perez. “But with the inflation in this country, it’s laughable. It’s really not good for anything.”

In Venezuela, the press has been reporting on the minimum wage rise. Internationally, it is the at least 41 people killed and hundreds more injured in the protests that continue to make headlines.
