Three people were killed and 79 injured on Wednesday, April 30, after knife-wielding mobs attacked people and set off explosives at a railway station in China's troubled northwestern region of Xinjiang.

The attack happened at around 5:10 p.m. when assailants armed with knives started
"slashing people" at an exit of the South Railway Station in Urumqi, Xinhua reported.

At the same time, according to the Wall Street Journal, explosives were detonated.

According to an Apple Daily picture, one explosion happened in front of a police station.

Xinhua said the railway station re-opened around two hours after the attack, with a heavy police presence.

The attack comes as President Xi Jinping was wrapping up a visit to the area.

According to Reuters, Xi promised "decisive actions" against the "terrorists" behind the attack in Xinjiang.

The violence that has been afflicting the region for years is blamed by the government on Islamist militants and separatists seeking an independent state called East Turkestan.
