A U.S. intelligence report has concluded that a Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine is more likely than previously thought.
Fears are mounting that Russia's annexation of Crimea may not be the last land grab Moscow is considering.
An estimated 30,000 to 80,000 Russian troops are now massed near Russia's eastern border with Ukraine, in what Moscow says is a military exercise.
The U.S. and other nations worry the real reason for the troop buildup could be an invasion of southeast Ukraine in order to create a 'land bridge' into newly annexed Crimea.
Another concern lies to the west, in the breakaway nation of Transnistria located on the border between Moldova and Ukraine.
Unrecognized by any UN member state, Transnistria nonetheless has its own flag, currency, parliament and elected president. Some 1,200 Russian troops are currently stationed in Transnistria.
A Russian newspaper reported March 18 that the breakaway region is hoping to follow the path of Crimea by holding a referendum and joining the Russian Federation.
