At least 10 people were injured in a grenade attack on a tourist resort in Kenya early on Thursday morning (January 2).
Local police chief Jack Ekakuro said three people arrived at the Tandoori bar on a motorcycle and threw a grenade at the bar before riding off, the BBC reports.
The bar was packed with New Year revellers when the the attack took place at around 3:30 a.m.
The injured have been sent to the hospital for treatment and are in stable condition.
"This is just a local crime, not something that will be attached to terrorism," regional police chief for the coast area Aggrey Adoli said in a Daily Telegraph report. He said the grenade "had been hurled into a local nightclub where locals go".
Kenya has been hit with a number of such attacks since its troops invaded southern Somalia in 2011 to help drive out the al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab group.
Radical Kenyan Islamist groups including al Hijira have ties to al Shabaab and are known to be active on Kenya's coast.
Restaurants in Mombasa and busy areas of the capital Nairobi as well as northeast regions bordering Somalia are frequent sites of attacks.
In December two British tourists travelling between Diani and Mombasa escaped unharmed after a grenade thrown at their vehicle failed to explode.
