If you’re one of those people who grew up idolizing Popeye the Sailor Man you can travel to the Mediterranean for some reminiscing and an unbeatable experience.

Nestled in Anchor Bay of the small island nation of Malta, is Sweethaven, a quaint village dedicated to Popeye. 19 vibrant houses rest in the village and they were all made to reflect the iconic character.

The village is, or rather was, a movie set. The tiny town served as the location for the Popeye film in 1980.

After the cameras stopped rolling, the village was converted to a museum and amusement park. Construction of the village started in 1979. It was certainly a tedious project, as wood and shingles had to be shipped in from other countries.

An over 200 foot breakwater was also installed to prevent tidal waves from destroying the set. All those efforts are still paying off today.

Perfectly preserved and maintained, the village which is open year round, now offers rides, performances and playgrounds in addition to a staff that portrays Popeye and his clan.
