Detained observers make public appearance in Slaviansk

International observers in Slaviansk appear for the first time since being detained by pro-Russian separatists three days ago.

The leader of the group, Colonel Axel Schneider, says the group is healthy but anxious to be allowed to go home.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) COLONEL AXEL SCHNEIDER SAYING:

"We have no indication when we will be sent home to our countries and to see our families."

The group appeared alongside the self-declared mayor who had guaranteed the group's safety.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) COLONEL AXEL SCHNEIDER SAYING:

"The word of the mayor of this city remains, as long as we stay here in this city and in this region, no harm will be given to the officers and the interpreter."

Still, the group says it has stayed in line with its mandate under the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
