A 14-year-old student has been arrested for the murder of a 24-year-old Massachusetts high school math teacher on Wednesday (October 23).
It was reported that police in Danvers, Massachusetts began an investigation late on Tuesday after being reported that the Danvers High School teacher, Colleen Ritzer, had not returned home from work and was not answering her cellphone. They then discovered blood in a second-floor bathroom and later located the victim in the woods behind the school. It was also reported that surveillance video inside the high school has captured the student, Philip Chism dragging Ritzer's body in what appeared to be a recycle bin from the bathroom toward the woods. He was also found walking along a highway at about 12:30 am. The student is due to be charged as an adult in Salem District Court on Wednesday.
According to Reuters: "Massachusetts law allows people as young as 14 to be charged as adults when the crime is murder. The distinction means that, if convicted, Chism could face a longer prison sentence and confinement in an adult prison rather than a youth facility.
"All public schools in Danvers, which is about 20 miles north of Boston, were closed on Wednesday, although police believed there was no continuing threat to public safety.
The incident came after a middle school teacher was allegedly shot by a 12-year-old student in Nevada on Monday.
