Student sets fire to teacher Gabriela Penalba in Knoxville, Tennessee

A high school teacher in Knoxville, Tennessee escaped serious injury after a student in her class set fire to her shirt and hair on Monday.

Gabriela Penalba, a 23-year-old science teacher at West High School, had turned her back to the class when the 15-year-old boy ran up and set her shirt and hair alight.

We can only speculate as to why this boy did this. Hormones are very easy to blame, as anyone who has ever met one knows that the majority of teenage boys are only barely human. It might also be that the student legitimately had some mental issues; it might even be likely in fact, as setting fire to anyone is indisputably anti-social. We also kind of think that maybe the kid had a crush on the young teacher, as her Facebook photos show that she is rather an attractive woman, and just wanted to get the woman's attention, one way or another. It is not known why the student even had a lighter at school, as that sort of thing is usually contraband. But in any event, he set the poor woman aflame.

Other students in the class rushed to her aid, which is really a good sign. (Seriously, she must have been an awesome teacher because it would be pretty easy to imagine the room bursting into laughter and the woman's blouse burst in flames.) The quick-acting students were able to put out the fire, preventing any serious injury to her skin.

While the teacher ran out of the room, the boy chucked his lighter out of the window, probably to rid himself of the weapon. (This, of course, only reinforces the idea that he was totally not in his head, because the room was full of eyes when committed his crime of human arson.)

The police were eventually sent in and the kid took off running. They found him on a greenway not far from the school and arrested him. He admitted to everything and was charged in juvenile court to aggravated assault and evading arrest.
