A teenager carjacked two vehicles on Monday evening on Malaysia's East Coast Highway, causing a traffic accident that sent a 9-month-old baby into a coma and injured his parents.

According to local reports, Che Mastura Che Awang, 31, her husband Abdul Pirhat Karim, 34, their baby and two other relatives were travelling from Kelantan to Kuala Lumpur.

At around 6 p.m. they stopped at the Bukit Besi-Ajil rest area along the highway to use the restroom.

While the two relatives left the vehicle and the family waited inside, 17-year-old boy entered the car and drove away.

At km88 of Jalan Jerangau-Jabor near Ladang Gajah Mati, the car skidded out of control and crashed into another vehicle and a lorry, throwing the father and the baby out the window, the Malaysia Chronicle reported.

The teenager left the scene and hijacked another car heading toward Kuala Terengganu from Kuantan. He drove for about 25 kilometres.

The car was then found in Kampung Batu Rakit at around 7 p.m.with the teenager and the passengers inside. They were all unharmed.

The baby lapsed into a coma while the mother, sustained a broken rib and the father a fractured right shoulder.

They are now recovered at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital, in Kuala Terengganu.
