Virginia driver survives 80 mph collision with Amtrak train

Waverly, Virginia resident Untron Drew survived after an Amtrak train, travelling nearly 80 miles per hour, hit his vehicle car after he ignored a lowered railway crossing bar and drove around it.

Drunk driving isn't a joke. Particularly when there's a railway crossing along your route. Drew learned that lesson the hard way when he was caught in a near death experience early on Thursday.

When the 32-year-old came to a railway crossing, he ignored the train warning signal. Driving without a seatbelt, he made the decision to drive around the crossing bar.

Not surprisingly, alcohol was involved, according to local police.
His vehicle was struck by an Amtrak train headed for Boston.

"Northeast Regional train 174, operating from Norfolk to Boston, struck a vehicle at 5:57 am in Waverly. There were no reported injuries by any of the 46 passengers," wrote Amtrak spokeswoman Christina Leeds in an email to CBS 6. "The train will continue on when released by local authorities."

Drew is being treated for non-life threatening injuries at a nearby hospital.

State Police have charged 32-year-old Untron Drew with reckless driving, fail to obey railroad crossing signals and no seat belt.
