A distracted Taiwanese tourist made the news after walking off a pier in Australia while using her mobile phone to check Facebook. The accident occurred on Monday (December 16) night after the tourist decided to try and catch a view of penguins swimming near the St. Kilda pier in Melbourne's Port Phillip bay.

With her eyes glued to her mobile phone's screen, the unidentified woman plunged off the jetty into the frigid waters below.

Melbourne police in a rescue speedboat got to the woman about 20 minutes after she fell in and remarkably, despite being unable to swim, police say the woman told them she floated on her back while awaiting rescue and while wet and cold, suffered no serious injuries.

Police also noted that the woman kept a hold of her phone throughout the incident. The tourist from Taiwan apologized for her carelessness, but Senior Melbourne Constable Dean Kelly called on people to pay more attention to their surroundings when using social media.
