A man in Texas is now behind bars after urinating on a beloved landmark. 23-year-old Daniel Athens from El Paso reportedly pleaded guilty to urinating on the Alamo. The incident occurred back in April of 2012.

It was then that an Alamo Ranger witnessed Athens in a sectioned off area that was supposed to be inaccessible to the public. The very observant ranger also noticed Athens seemed to be putting his penis back inside his pants.

A closer look revealed there was liquid on the ground. The police report notes the ranger spotted a ‘puddle on the original mortar of the Shrine.’ The cop also believed the suspect to be intoxicated.

Aside from the disrespect, urinating on the Alamo poses another problem. Given the limestone composition, the sedimentary rock absorbs the salt then forces the salt out which in turn greatly contributes to the eroding process.

Athens pleaded guilty to ‘criminal mischief of a public monument or place of human burial’. He was recently sentenced to 18 months in prison and in addition to that, he’ll have to pay $4,000 in restitution to cover the cost of repairs to the building.
