A Brisbane, Australia man was left with a massive inch-wide hole burned into his cranium after applying black salve ointment to treat skin cancer.

The 55-year-old had been applying the salve for four months and by the time he arrived at Princess Alexandra Emergency Department for professional treatment, he told the doctors that he had been using strong narcotic analgesic to kill the pain.

The ointment is made from bloodroot which contains sanguinarine, is typically mixed with zinc chloride, combining to create a sweet-smelling, but corrosive ointment.

Applied topically, it is often used to treat conditions as diverse as moles, scars and even skin cancer. The ointment can destroy skin tissue, leaving conspicuous black scars, which later fall off.

Doctors first thought he needed an operation, but instead sending him home to for self-treatment with a wound management strategy. It healed within three months.

Doctors at initially thought the poor man would need an operation, but instead sent him home for self-treatment with a wound management strategy. Everything turned out well in the end, as the wound fully healed within three months.

Black salve ointment has been a popular method to treat skin lesions since early last century, but has been condemned by Aussie authorities since 2012.
