Security guard Pieter Baba said Oscar Pistorius told him everything was fine shortly after he fatally shot his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, on the fifth day of the South African Olympic and Paralympic track star's trial.

Baba, the night shift leader at Silverwoods Country estate, said that at around 2:55 a.m. on February 14 last year, a security guard who was on bike duty told him he heard gunshots. Later, Baba received multiple phone calls from residents who also informed him of the gunshots.

Baba then drove to the house of Johan Stripp, another witness who has testified before the trial. Stripp's house was 72 metres away from Pistorius'. Baba found Stipp standing on the balcony and pointing at Pistorius' residence, where the lights were lit.

Baba told the court that he then called Pistorius using a site mobile phone. The athlete told him everything was fine, but the security guard remained suspicious as he could tell Pistorius had been crying. The conversation ended after Baba told Pistorius to calm down.

A moment later, Baba received a phone call from Pistorius. Pistorius did not speak as he was crying into the receiver. He cut off the line.

Estate manager Johan Stander and his daughter then arrived in a car. They parked outside Pistorius's house. Two of the guards followed Stander.

Baba, said no one opened the door for them. Stander, who called Pistorius by his first name, stood at the door, while his daughter went inside the house. Baba wanted to take a look of what Pistorius was wearing but was instructed by Stander to call the police.

Baba said he was astonished to see Pistorius carrying a dying Reeva Steenkamp down the stairs, as the runner had told him everything was fine earlier. He could not recall how this happened as he was extremely shocked.

The trial has been adjourned until Monday, when Baba will continue to testify.
