Twenty years ago today the plane of Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana was shot down over Rwanda’s capital Kigali, killing him and everyone else on board.

The event triggered the Rwanda genocide.

Over the following 90 days between 500,000 and one million of Rwanda’s ethnic Tutsi minority, and Hutu moderates, were killed by members of the Hutu majority.

The genocide and civil war prompted a regional refugee crisis.

Today, over 200,000 Rwandan refugees remain in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Al Jazeera's Malcolm Webb reports from Goma.
