Drunk Japanese taxi driver arrested for 'protecting' store with fake sword

Angry that a local convenience clerk had been robbed at knifepoint, a drunk Japanese taxi driver showed up at the shop with a fake sword, declared himself the best "bodyguard" in Japan, pledged to protect the store and was promptly arrested, according to a report in the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

The incident happened on Saturday when the 65-year-old cab driver got drunk and took an imitation sword to a convenience store in Mukomachi, Japan that had been robbed on December 23. In the previous incident, two men had threatened a 23-year-old part-time clerk with a small knife and made off with 50,000 yen (US$500).

The taxi driver allegedly introduced himself as the Bodyguard, in reference to the movie Yojimbo (用心棒, aka The Bodyguard), and vowed to protect the store, saying that no one could defeat him except for perhaps famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. The 20-year-old clerk called police, and the cabbie was arrested on suspicion of violating Japan's Firearm and Sword Possession Control Law.
