At least 40 people were killed in an army depot explosion in Brak al-Chati near Sabha in southern Libya on Thursday.

A group of 43 locals and Africans immigrants were storming the army depot to steal tank ammunition when the explosion of unknown origin took place.

More than 40 people were killed, Khalifa Al Sughair, commander of a border security guard brigade in Brak al-Chati, said according to a Reuters report. Local medics had only seen four injured and two dead bodies so far as bodies are still being recovered from the rubble.

State television reported that valuable copper can be removed from tank ammunition.

Four soldiers were killed in a clash with a Salafist militia group in Benghazi on the same day.
