A new pair of smart glasses that allow healthcare workers to see through a patient's skin was unveiled by Espon and Evena Medical on November 20, which could potentially make it easier for carers to insert intravenous needles.

The Eyes-On Glasses are based on Espon's Moverio technology, which can display graphics for the wearer to see. The glasses add a forward-facing camera for 3D imaging and illumination to brighten the scene.

The glasses work by using multispectral lighting to highlight deoxygenated hemoglobin in a patient's veins. Two digital cameras capture images or video.

Data can be stored on the glasses or transmitted wirelessly using Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or a 3G wireless connection, allowing images to be shared remotely and allowing the glasses to connect to electronic medical records systems for automated documentation.

Studies have shown that up to 40 percent of the time, inserting an IV requires multiple attempts to locate and access a vein. The manufacturer hopes the glasses will be commercially available to medical clients as of the first quarter of next year.
