Two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire and killed two Belarusian military instructors in Sanaa on Tuesday.

According to reports, the two men had just left the hotel where they were staying, and were waiting for a taxi when two unknown gunmen on a motorbike approached them and opened fire.

Witnesses said one of the men was shot in the head, the bullet entered from the back and exited from the front. The other was hit in the face.

''I was standing there by the cemetery, and heard five or six gunshots," witness Ahmed Saleh said according to Reuters, "then we went towards the hotel gate, and found two Russians, the first was dead, and the second was wounded and put his hand on his chest."

Police initially identified the pair as Russians, but a Russian embassy official in Sanaa said the victims were citizens of Belarus and had been in yemen for a year under a private contract.

One man died instantly, while the other was badly injured and taken to hospital with a vehicle from the nearby presidential palace which arrived at the scene about 10 minutes after the attack, BBC reported.

It was not immediately clear the reason of the shooting and who carried it out.
According to Reuters, citizens of countries in the former Soviet Union are not previously known to have been targets for Yemen's al Qaeda branch or other Islamist militant groups.

Violence however is common in Yemen, where an interim government has to deal with southern secessionists, al Qaeda-linked militants and northern Houthi rebels, as well as severe economic problems inherited from veteran President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
