Fifteen people on their way to a wedding in Yemen were killed in a drone attack on Thursday (December 12) when their vehicles were reportedly mistaken for an al-Qaeda convoy.

The wedding party cars were allegedly mistaken for a militant convoy while they were travelling through Yemen's central al-Bayda province, a region that is considered an al-Qaeda stronghold.

"An air strike missed its target and hit a wedding car convoy, ten people were killed immediately and another five who were injured died after being admitted to hospital," a security official said in a Reuters report.

Militant group al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is considered the most active in Yemen. The United States acknowledges its usage of drones in Yemen and other Middle Eastern countries but does not typically comment on the practice.

Another drone attack on Monday killed three people traveling through Yemen in a car.
