Plane lands safely after hijacker attempts to land in Sochi

Turkey scrambled a fighter jet on Friday to force down an airliner after a man unsuccessfully attempted to hijack a plane and divert it to Sochi in Russia, venue of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Initial reports said a Ukrainian man holding a detonator claimed there was a bomb in the baggage hold of the Pegasus Airlines plane, which was carrying 110 passengers from Kharkov in the Ukraine to Istanbul in Turkey.

"[The man] asked the plane to not land in Sabiha Gokcen (in Turkey) but rather to land in Sochi," Transportation Ministry official Habip Soluk said Friday on CNNTurk.

The alleged hijacker was detained aboard the plane as Cihan News Agency of Turkey published a photograph a man standing in a numbered-11 sports jersey with two people in uniform amid empty seats.

The pilots managed to radio in the threat and two Turkish F-16 jet was scrambled to accompany the plane 20 minutes after a hijacking alert was sent at 5:20 p.m. The Pegasus jet landed safely in Istanbul at 6:04 p.m.

The suspect was reportedly taken away by Turkish special forces for questioning while the plane was searched for explosives.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said that the Ukrainian Embassy in Turkey is working with Turkish officials to establish the nationality of the alleged hijacker.
