Lawsuits are almost always a huge drain on the people who are involved with them, and there's nothing that can change that. There are three rules of lawsuits that I tell my clients; they take longer than you think, they cost more than you think, and they're more emotionally draining than you think. And no matter what you think, those are the three rules. It's important to plan for those three rules, whether you're the plaintiff who's bringing the lawsuit or whether you're the defendant who's deciding how to defend against it.

So, it's good to get specifics from your lawyer about what to expect. How long is this going to take? What's realistic? What are my costs going to be? Get a commitment from your lawyer to say, "Hey, if things go differently than expected, you're going to let me know. You're going to keep me updated by emails. You're going to let me know if our billing expectations have changed. You're going to let me know if our case suddenly looks stronger or weaker than we initially thought." Those are the kind of things that help make a realistic analysis that's going to allow you to get the best outcome for the least cost.
