Kate Upton: Sports Illustrated swimsuit photoshoot in zero gravity

Views 4

Kate Upton recently did a photoshoot for Sports Illustrated's 2014 Swimsuit Issue on a zero-gravity plane. Of course, you're here because you want to know about the technical details.

The photoshoot took place in a modified Boeing-727, known as G-FORCE ONE, run by a company called Zero G at the Space Coast Regional Airport at Cape Canaveral in Florida. Passengers, including famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, who did a flight in 2007, experience true weightlessness or the effects of lunar gravity for 20 to 30 seconds each time the plane performs an aerobatic maneuver known as a parabola.

The plane first flies level to the horizon at an altitude of 24,000 feet before ascending at a 45-degree angle to 34,000 feet to start a parabola. As the plane is ascending, passengers inside are on a padded cabin floor, glued to the floor by the forces of 1.8 Gs, which nearly double their body weight, before experiencing zero gravity as the plane goes up and over the hump of the parabola.

As the plane descends at a 30-degree angle in a gentle pull-out, passengers fall back down to the padded cabin floor. The plane then repeats the maneuver. For Kate Upton's photoshoot, the plane performed 17 parabolas, 13 to replicate zero gravity and four for lunar gravity.
