With an international airport, frequent intercity train and bus services, and excellent road connections, most people use Faro as both an entry point and a base to explore the Algarve.

Outside of Faro there is not a lot of public transport. Our favourite way of getting around is by car. You can either drive your own in, or hire one at the airport; although it will save you time and money to pre-book with one of the various rental services in the city.

Some of the roads can get quite busy at certain times of the year but the driving here is some of the best in the country. The ample signposting means that me and the wife argue less about navigation, and the fact that there is always somewhere of interest within a short distance means the kids are less likely to get bored on long journeys.

Once you get to where you want to be there are loads of boat trips and different footpaths and cycle trails to help you explore the local area. You can take parts of the Algarve Way -- a 240 km inland pathway -- or the Vincentina Route -- a 350 km network of coastal pathways -- both only recently completed and opened.

Obviously you don't have to do them all at once.
