Six people were killed and nine injured in a car bomb blast at a car repair shop near the city of Peshawar in western Pakistan on Thursday (January 23).

The attack took place at a car shop in the Scheme Chowk area outside Peshawar on Kohat Road. A bomb disposal unit estimated that up to 30 kg of explosives and ball bearings had been fitted into the car before the explosion took place.

The car shop and several vehicles in the vicinity were destroyed. Several residential buildings, shops and a cellphone tower were damaged.

"There was a loud band and I saw huge flames coming out of the motor workshop and then I fell to the ground," Shahidullah, owner of a nearby drinks shop, said in an AFP report.

It was reported that two days earlier, a man had parked the car at the shop for repairs. Police are not ruling out the possibility that the bomb had been installed in the car after it was left at the shop. Investigators said it is also possible that the car shop was the target of the attack.

In recent weeks there has been a sharp increase in incidents of terrorist attacks in Pakistan. No militant group has taken responsibility for the attack on the car shop.
