World Cup winner and former Tottenham Hotspurs player Ossie Ardiles is recovering in hospital after he and former team-mate Ricardo "Ricky" Villa were involved in a single car accident on Monday night (January 20) while making a documentary in the Falkland Islands.

Ardiles and Villa were driving from the town of Darwin to the Falkland Island's capital of Stanley on Monday evening. Reports say their vehicle struck a sheep and left the road. Their car rolled down a small slope and came to rest on its side.

A UK Royal Air Force rescue helicopter was dispatched to the crash site and the two men were transported to hospital with only minor injuries. Officials at the King Edward Memorial Hospital in Stanley said neither Ardiles nor Villa were seriously injured in the crash, but Ardiles did require some 20 stitches to his head.

Ardiles was part of the Argentine national team that won the World Cup in 1978 and also played for UK team the Tottenham Hotspurs during his career. Ardiles' UK career was hindered by the conflict between Argentina and Great Britain over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands (claimed by Argentina and called the Malvinas Islands in Argentina) but he returned shortly after the war.

In total, both Ardiles and Villa played for or managed UK soccer teams for some 15 years. Ardiles now lives in the UK where he operates a soccer school.
