This video lecture from Aliphatic Hydrocarbons (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the Addition reactions of alkenes (Part 3). It is an extension of previous lecture and two more acids are now made to react with alkenes following the same mechanism (The Markownikov’s rule). When sulphuric acid reacts with alkenes, alkyl bisulphate is formed along with the formation of water. When halogen react in aqueous medium, halogen acids along with hypohalous acids are formed. These acids have a hydroxyl group which is less electronegative than halogen consequently after application of same mechanism, halohydrins are formed when made to react with alkenes.
